Fighting Childhood Obesity
Under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which President Obama signed into law on December 13, 2010, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) must develop and update federal nutrition standards for foods made available in public schools. As part of this process, the USDA is currently accepting comments on proposed guidelines for what can and should be sold at public schools as snacks. The NAACP strongly supports the USDA’s proposed rule, which would make sure schools provide healthy snacks and drinks to students.
We have until Tuesday, April 9, 2013, to tell the USDA that we support its proposal and want to continue the progress which has been made with healthy school lunches by updating nutritional guidelines for snacks to ensure that schools sell healthy food and drinks to students.
