SENATE HEALTH, EDUCATION, LABOR & PENSIONS (H.E.L.P.) COMMITTEE TO VOTES 12 - 10 TO SUPPORT CIVIL RIGHTS FRIEND AND ALLY TOM PEREZ
On May 16, 2013, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (“HELP”) voted to approve of the nomination of Tom Perez to be the next Secretary of Labor and to forward his nomination for consideration to the full Senate with a favorable report. The vote, which was 12 yeas to 10 nays, was split along party lines, which signals that this eminently qualified nominee may unfortunately fall victim to petty partisan politics. This would clearly be a tragedy in the view of the numerous civil rights groups, business leaders, and labor unions who all agree that Tom Perez is the right person to lead this crucial department at a critical time when our economy is still recovering and too many American workers still need services and protections.
Prior to his nomination to serve as U.S. Secretary of Labor, Mr. Perez had served as the Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights and is well known and very well respected by the NAACP. There is no doubt that he will be a progressive, effective, Secretary of Labor. Throughout his career, Tom Perez has demonstrated that he has the talent, energy, knowledge, skills and experience to lead the U.S. Department of Labor in its important mission to protect and grow the middle class and to help all Americans obtain and retain decent jobs with adequate compensation.
In his capacity as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, the NAACP has worked closely with Mr. Perez over the last four years. We have been impressed by not only his passion for the protection of Americans’ civil and human rights, but also with his ability to get real, quantifiable, results. Prior to coming to the US Department of Justice, Mr. Perez also did an exemplary job for the State of Maryland as Secretary of Labor. In this capacity, he collaborated with businesses and employees to address critical workforce development needs and to build a world-class workforce.
THE NAACP ENTHUSIASTICALLY AND PROUDLY ENDORSES TOM PEREZ CONFIRMATION AS SECRETARY OF LABOR AND URGES HIS SPEEDY CONFIRMATION. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND URGE THEIR STRONG SUPPORT.
