NAACP Economic Reciprocity Initiative

How It All Started…

In 1996, the NAACP launched the Economic Reciprocity Initiative (ERI) as a sustained consumer movement to measure corporate America’s financial relationship with the African American community. Over the past eleven years, the ERI has expanded its scope and has continued to highlight on an annual basis the diversity efforts made in a number of leading industries.

Dillard’s has refused to participate for four years.

Call to Action:

  • Consumers: Contact Dillard’s. Ask them why they choose not to partner with the Association in support of the Economic Reciprocity Initiative.
  • Shareholders: Demand economic diversity and transparency from Dillard’s and other corporations you invest in.
  • Consumers and Shareholders: Vote with your dollars. Black buying power is over $700 billion a year. In this economic climate, corporations need African Americans. When you spend, make informed decisions and choose corporations that are committed to diversity and inclusion.
  • Corporations: Commit to diversity, be a leader, and be transparent. Use the NAACP Best Practices Guide as a resource to improve your diversity and inclusion efforts.
  • Visit the NAACP website for more information on economic reciprocity. An online petition will also be available for individuals to sign. The NAACP will present this petition to Dillard’s.

2007 Best Practices Guide

The NAACP Diversity Best Practice Guide highlights the diversity and inclusion practices of the highest performing companies in each of the categories noted in the ERI. The Best Practices Guide is meant 1) to provide corporate executives, diversity practitioners, and human resource professionals with information to begin a dialogue about diversity and inclusion in corporate America, and 2) to be used as a mechanism to highlight what works as corporations continue to evaluate their current corporate diversity programs.
