While the Congressional Black Caucus took the first leadership role by calling the atrocities in Darfur, Sudan genocide and calling on their fellow Members of Congress and the President to stand up and take action, the genocide continues.
It is important that more people are educated about the suffering of the Darfuri people so that we will be able to call the world into action to end the genocide in Darfur and so that people will know how they can help end one of the largest security and humanitarian crisis.
You can let Congress know that you and your community care about the Darfuri people and expect them to take immediate action to help end the genocide by meeting with your congressional member or their staff. It is important that your elected officials know that you care about the issue and what you believe are the appropriate next steps.
You can also write a letter to your representative highlighting why you think they should care about this issue.
People are dying every day in Darfur. Women are being raped every day in Darfur. However, if you were to look at major media outlets you would think that Britney Spears, Paris hilton, etc. are most important news worthy items to report.
You can take action by generating your own letters to the editor, op-eds, and doing blog postings.
Letters to Editor are a widely read and used vehicle to get the voice of the people out to the readers of the newspaper. It is a highly effective tool. Just note that you should try more than one newspaper in hopes of getting it published. Also, letters to the editor should be short and concise rarely exceeding 200 words.
Op-eds are an excellent medium to get communities of conscience involved on the issue of Darfur. Op-eds should provide background information and even highlight policy initiatives to help end the genocide. Please contact your newspaper to find out their specific guidelines to submit an op-ed.
In recent years, blogs have become a major source of information for internat uses. In fact, most Presidential campaign websites have the ability for people to blog. Responding to a newspaper article of providing your spefic point of view on Darfur will help coverage about the genocide. It will also serve to educate internet users about the conflict. Make sure you post as many comments as possible and encourage others to do the same.
