Convention is upon us! This weekend we will gather in Orlando, Florida to kick off the NAACP’s 104th National Convention. This year’s convention theme is “We Shall Not Be Moved”. We will focus on the modern day attempts to roll back the progress of the civil rights era, and our efforts to combat them.
This convention occurs in a year of critical civil rights anniversaries, including the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Medgar Evers, and the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. It also takes place on the heels of three Supreme Court decisions impacting civil rights, and during the trial of Trayvon Martin’s killer.
The lineup for this year’s speakers is exciting. Special guests include but are not limited to: President & CEO, Benjamin Todd Jealous; Chairman of the Board, Roslyn Brock; The President and First Lady of Haiti, Michel & Sophia Martelly; Attorney General, US Department of Justice, Eric Holder; Chairman Emeritus, Julian Bond; Chairman Emeritus, Myrlie Evers; Singer, Bridget Kelly; and Singing Group, En Vogue.
The convention will also spotlight emerging youth from across the nation in the Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, or ACT-SO, competition. The competition will start on July 11, with students competing in 26 ACT-SO categories, including sciences, humanities, performing arts, visual arts, and business over the course of the event. Famed ACT-SO alumni include musician Kanye West, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, filmmaker John Singleton and comedian Anthony Anderson.
Join us as we celebrate the kick-off to an amazing convention filled with organizing, entertainment, and memories for years to come. See you all in Florida!
