Posted on February 26, 2013
Last week, the NAACP hosted its Diversity Job Fair and Financial Advocacy and Community Tour (F.A.C.T.) in Chicago, Illinois at the Navy Pier. Over 600 people attended the fair and near half of those participants were connected with economic resources at FACT. Mjiba Frehiwot, Director of Economic Education, was excited that the NAACP South Side Chicago members were there in “full force.” “The outcome was so positive! We [the NAACP] were front and center," she says.
Employers from Chicago and across the United States participated including United Rentals, Chicago Zoological Society, - Brookfield Zoo, Wells Fargo Advisors, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Jewel-Osco - A SUPERVALU Company and Sinai Health System.
Around 20 economic organizations including Accion, Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, the Center for Economic Progress and Hope Fair Housing Center assisted participants with free tax preparation, micro lending, energy assistance and other economic resources. Hope Fair Housing Center even provided several attendees with prizes, including pictures of famous civil rights icons.
This year marks the second year of FACT. The inaugural year was a tremendous success as the tour exposed over a thousand NAACP members and communities nationwide to valuable resources needed to address economic challenges that may be directly or indirectly affecting their community, family or themselves.
