As 2011 comes to a close, the NAACP has launched a series of blogs, "10 Reasons to be a Part of NAACP", reflecting on our work this year and the year ahead. Each day, we'll feature a new blog on our social networks. View the entire "10 Reasons" series, and donate to the NAACP here.
Local advocacy is the heartbeat of the NAACP. It fuels the concerns of the eight issue areas of our national advocacy.
The rich history of local activism can be traced back to our founding members who were fed up with the abominable practice of lynching and the Springfield, IL race riot in 1908. Since that time, our local units continue to ensure political education, social and economic equality for all people of color, and eliminate race prejudice.
This year, members of the NAACP North Carolina State Conference challenged the lack of minority representation on the Wake County School Board. After numerous town hall meetings, sit-ins, rallies, scheduled elections and run-offs, the board was diversified and the needs of all students in the Wake County Public Schools will have a fair chance at a progressive and fair education.
Without the hard work and commitment from the membership of the NC State Conference, this victory would be defeat. Your support is needed to maintain our position as the champion for civil rights for over 100 years. Donate to the NAACP today and help us continue our great work.
