This weekend, NAACP is getting ready to attend Power Shift--a conference that is a chance for youth to make a difference on environmental issues and fellowship with others of like mind.
Since 2007, The Power Shift Conference has given youth from all over the world an opportunity to let their voices be heard as they advocate for global and environmental change. In the past, this national conference has been held in various parts of the word, such as: Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, just to name a few. Other Power Shift Conferences are also being organized by members of the International Youth Climate Movement including Africa, Japan and India.
This year, the 5-day United States Power Shift Conference www.wearepowershift.org (October 17th-21st) will take place at The David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA. During this action packed weekend, youth will focuses on climate change with an aim to build the youth climate movement in their respective communities through workshops, expert panel discussions, keynote speakers, and nightly concerts. The focus of Power Shift is, as the name implies, shifting power from fossil fuel based energy economy to a clean energy system and from fossil fuel based company control of our energy policies to a more democratic policy making arena.
Amongst many great organizations participating in this event which is anchored by the Energy Action Coalition and includes groups like Indigenous Environmental Network, Green For ALL, and others, your very own NAACP-Environmental and Climate Justice Department (ECJD) has been invited to participate in the national conference! The ECJ department will present 3 workshops (Environmental Justice 101, Coal Blooded, and Beasts of the Southern Wild), between Saturday and Sunday.
