Dr. Benjamin Carson confirmed as Secretary of HUD

March 3, 2017

Yesterday, on March 2, 2017, Dr. Benjamin S. Carson, Sr. was confirmed by the United States Senate to be the U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).  After being questioned at length for having no experience in running a federal agency, nor for managing government assisted housing, and for criticizing HUD’s role in enforcing anti-housing discrimination laws, Dr. Carson is now responsible for a department with a $47 billion budget and a mission to “increase homeownership, support community development and increase access to affordable housing free from discrimination.”  The final confirmation vote was 58 yeas to 41 nays, with one Senator absent.

For more information on Secretary Carson’s background as well as issues the NAACP hopes to work with him on in the future, as well as the full vote in the US Senate, please see the attached Issue Update.
