Aziz v. City of Ft. Myers

U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, No. 79-057-W-C.

A group of Ft. Myers' citizens called the Citizens for a Better Fort Myers Pac have proposed to modify the City Charter with an Initiative it wishes to place on the City's ballot. The Initiative would add an additional two wards to the existing five-member single districts which were created under the original 1983 case Aziz (wherein the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida placed the City under an injunction which required the City to obtain Court approval of a single member district plan to address past discrimination). The NAACP Legal Department participated in City Council meetings and successfully persuaded the City to add an additional majority-minority ward, resulting in 3 majority-minority wards with over 53% black voting age population in each of those wards.
