Claudia Withers is the Chief Operating Officer of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. In that role, she is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Association.
Ms. Withers was formerly COO of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where, in addition to day-to-day operations, she oversaw the development of the EEOC’s strategic plan for FY 2012-2016 and its implementation. As COO of the EEOC, Ms. Withers reported to Chair Jacqueline A. Berrien.
Ms. Withers served in the Clinton Administration as a Deputy General Counsel in the Office of General Counsel at the U.S. Department of Education. In addition, Ms. Withersserved as the Director of Programs for the District of Columbia Bar Foundation, where she developed and directed grants and loan repayment programs to support civil legal services to the poor and underserved in the District of Columbia. In addition, she served as Executive Director of the Fair Employment Council of Greater Washington and Director of Employment Programs for the National Partnership on Women and Families (formerly Women’s Legal Defense Fund).
Ms. Withers also has been a principal in her own consulting firm, Winston Withers Associates. She has served as an adjunct professor at the David A. Clarke School and the Washington College of Law at American University. Ms. Withers practiced law in Durham, NC, and clerked for the Honorable Richard C. Erwin for the Middle District of North Carolina. She is a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill School of Law and Duke University.
Claudia Withers’ current volunteer commitments include serving as Chair of the Committee on Admissions for the District of Columbia Court of Appeals.
