Video: Remembering Activist & Image Awards Recipient Wangari Maathai

Kenvyan activist Wangari Muta Maathai died on Sunday, September 24th after a battle with cancer. Matthai was a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and awarded Chairman’s Award at the 40th NAACP Image Awards along with former Vice President Al Gore. She was 71 years old.

Maathai founded the Kenyan Green Belt Movement in the late 1970s to mobilize rural women to plant 40 million trees over three decades. She won the Nobel Prize in 2004 for environmentalism and social activism.

Matthai was awarded the Chairman’s Award at the 40th NAACP Image Awards in 2009. Watch the video clip of her acceptance:
