The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) welcomes seven 2005 Law Fellows to its annual program sponsored by the Kellogg Company.

The 2005 class includes: Damien C. Jackson, a Southern University Law Center student from Baton Rouge, La.; William O. Jawando, a Catholic University Columbus School of Law student from the District of Columbia; Syretta L. McNeal, a University of Missouri-Columbia Law student from Phoenix, Ariz.; Kenechukwu O. The NAACP also welcomes international observer Scott Calnan of Randwick, NSW Australia, who has completed his dissertation, titled "In the Trenches: A Comparative Analysis of the Nature and Effectiveness of the Mobilization of Law by Domestic Human Rights NGOs in the United States, Britain and Germany." Calnan is volunteering at the Association with the goal of establishing a civil rights organization in Australia using the NAACP grass roots model of advocacy.

Angela Ciccolo, NAACP Interim General Counsel, said: "The NAACP Law Fellows Program will provide these bright legal minds with essential training and support from the most prominent civil rights organization in the country. We applaud Kelloggs dedication to this effort and appreciate its commitment to the NAACP."

The fellows, who will serve until August 12, will research a number of legal issues including: renewal of the Voting Rights Act, racial disparities in the juvenile justice system, public education death penalty sentencing, public accommodation and employment discrimination. The Law Fellows will also work closely with the Washington Bureau on legislative advocacy.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are frontline advocates for civil rights, social justice and equal opportunity under law.
