A PROTEST OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SECESSION GALA Advocates for peace and progress will gather in Charleston, South Carolina on Monday, December 20, 2010 for a vigil and march to oppose this event which would celebrate South Carolina's secession from the United States of America in order to retain the privilege of holding human beings as property. This initiative is part of the ongoing Campaign for Dignity in South Carolina. The protest will begin with pickets staged between 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM at two of the host hotels in Charleston to call attention to those supporting the neo-Confederate mindset. Those who wish to participate in the pickets should signup in advance and meet us at Emanuel AME Church, 110 Calhoun Street in downtown Charleston at 1:30 PM for orientation. The main protest activity will be the Unity Vigil and Mass Meeting scheduled later in the day. The vigil will take place at the garden at Gaillard Municipal Auditorium, 77 Calhoun Street beginning at 4:30 PM. We will march from the auditorium to Morris Brown AME Church, 13 Morris Street, for the Mass Meeting. At 6:00 PM the Mass Meeting will begin with remarks from peace and justice advocates, including a panel to discuss the significant impact of the Civil War on present day society and culture in South Carolina. Excerpts from the film "The Birth of a Nation" will help set the stage for the dialogue. Help us remind the local community, the Nation and all of humanity about the terrible consequences of embracing an ideology of racial dominance. This is a nonviolent protest. All who agree to stand with us in peace and solidarity are welcome to participate. We will provide signs and candles for the protest. Organizations may bring handheld banners that identify their group. All participants are reminded to dress warmly in layers and to wear comfortable shoes. Also, to minimize any impact on the tourism industry, we have arranged a repast in the fellowship hall, and advise against securing lodging at local establishments. Parking will be available at Emanuel AME Church, which is located near the auditorium, and along nearby streets. Shuttle vans will return participants to your vehicles. Groups traveling on charter buses should let us know by 2 PM EST on Friday, December 17, 2010 to secure parking arrangements.
