Summary:

Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.

We are seeking two dynamic and experienced professionals for a short term position (3 months) to support the objectives for one of the Association’s major policy advocacy, reform and public education programs:  Environmental and Climate Justice, examining the impact of climate change on African Americans and other communities of color and working with communities to organize to advance social justice.

Summary of Duties:

The Environmental and Climate Justice State Coordinators will report to the Director, Environmental and Climate Justice Program.  Job responsibilities will include the following:

  • Build long term capacity of NAACP local leadership in Ohio and Virginia states by training NAACP Adult and Youth Leaders in Environmental and Climate Justice  including science, issues, and impact, as well as advocacy and organizing skills.
  • Work with NAACP branches on designing and implementing Coal Blooded Campaigns.
  • Work with branches to generate  comments on the Carbon Pollution Rule by the end of the comment period
  • Ensure participation of minimally NAACP representatives in each Carbon Pollution Standard In-Person EPA Hearing.
  • Recruit new activists committed to action on environmental and climate justice.
  • Work with NAACP branches and ECJ Communications Coordinator as well as NAACP Communications Team to generate  multiple forms of earned media on the Carbon Pollution Rule by the end of the comment period including;
    • Op-Eds on the Carbon Pollution Rule
    • Radio Interviews  on the Carbon Pollution Rule
    • Local newspaper articles touting the NAACP voice on the Carbon Pollution Standard, resulting from press conferences/press releases
    • Creative viral videos created by the NAACP Youth and College Division

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies and personal qualities:

  • A passion for advocating for the creation of progressive policies and programs as well as for the elimination of social policies and practices that lead to racial and ethnic disparities.
  • Experience with and interest in environmental issues is preferred
  • At least a 2-5 year history of community organizing for social change
  • Track record of success managing multiple programs and events.
  • A working understanding of NAACP structure, policy, procedures and goals.
  • Strong communications and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to travel upon request extensively throughout the state and elsewhere.
