Summary:
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
We seek a Regional Field Director to be responsible for overseeing field operations.  Incumbent will provide both support for and direction to NAACP units (including state and state/area youth & college divisions, youth councils and college chapters) operating within the region. The position is unique in that it both (1) provides support to the needs of units in the form of trainings, advice for unit leadership, advocacy for regional units within the larger NAACP family, as well as supporting region-wide member needs; and (2) mobilizes units, members, people of color and allies within the region to engage in grassroots and legislative organizing as well as civic participation on targeted campaigns established by the national NAACP.


Summary of Duties:
Reporting to the National Field Director, incumbent will:

  • Train and mobilize units, members and stakeholders to know the basic operating obligations and structures of NAACP units at all levels.  This includes but is not limited to:
    • Coordinate and/or conduct Executive Leadership Training for State/State Area Conference and Unit Officers. To facilitate this, work with the Unit Capacity Building Division to conduct Mandatory Training and opportunistic trainings.
    • Foster productive working relationships between the State/State-Area Conferences and State Youth & College Divisions to increase youth activism and engagement.
    • Provide advice and counsel to unit leadership, especially new unit leadership on effective unit operations, NAACP goals and policies.
  • Implement multi-faceted advocacy and civic participation campaigns on key issues, including supporting the training of unit leadership and members to act as organizers and advocates and establishing alliances to integrate non-members into NAACP campaigns.  Do this while operating within campaign accountability standards established by the National Field Director.
    • Coordinate the efforts of Regional Field Organizers who may be hired to work on specific campaigns within the region.
  • Act as a senior representative of the NAACP national office and the NAACP within the region, including but not limited to:
    • Represent the NAACP at various conferences, both outside the NAACP as well as at NAACP sponsored events.
    • Provide staff support to relevant Board committees as assigned
  • Support the work of NAACP departments in their engagement with the region, including:
    • Assist the Membership Division in the integration of membership development with organizing strategies implemented by state and local units.
    • Work with the Unit Capacity Building Division to implement an annual plan to increase the number of units in compliance with NAACP requirements within the region.
    • Act as liaison to integrate local unit involvement with those of the National Office Staff, Advocacy and Research Department, Legal Department and Washington Bureau Staff working in the Regions on specific actions, such as lawsuits, Voter Empowerment, Advocacy activities and other civil rights work where shared local and national involvement in central to success.
    • Work with Stakeholder Relations Division to identify other public and private organizations and institutions engaged in activities related to NAACP goals and objectives and seek to utilize these to advance the work of the NAACP in meeting these goals and objectives within the region.
    • Assist the National Field Director in the identification of opportunities for the chartering and reactivation of units;
    • Review and handle questions and/or problems from NAACP Units referred by the Constituent Services Division at the Regional level.
    • Provide support for the NAACP’s disaster relief efforts within a region.
  • In consultation with the National Field Director, be attentive to your own professional development, including but not limited to:
    • Attend trainings on community organizing, civic participation, volunteer engagement, and NAACP rules, history, strategies and policies.
    • Provide the National Field Director with timely monthly and quarterly reports detailing progress toward annual strategic goals and organizing/advocacy activity of state and local units.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the National Field Director

Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies and personal qualities:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least five (5) years of management experience, preferably in a non-profit organization.
  • Significant leadership experience within the adult field structure of the NAACP.
  • Extensive experience directing large, complex organizing campaigns.
  • Experience in building adult and life membership.
  • Experience in setting and achieving measurable targets, managing teams, and coordinating between multiple stakeholders.
  • Ability to handle multiple priority projects and meet established timelines and reporting requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to execute strategic goals, work effectively with state and local leaders and carry out required objectives.
  • Excellent analytical, presentation and leadership skills.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively and work non-standard hours, including weekends and holidays.
