Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. The Senior Director, National Board Office will be responsible for day-to-day management of the Board Office, serving as the primary liaison between the Office of the Chairman/ Board of Directors, NAACP’s President and CEO, the Executive Office, staff, branches and the external community to exchange information and promote favorable relations. Oversees general non-profit governance related to the Board of Directors. Develops/revises the structure and format for general Board and sub-committee meetings, organizes meetings, coordinates logistics, ensures timely distribution of Board-related information and follows up on resulting action items to ensure completion. Helps facilitate effective Board and staff communications.  Ensures new Board member and SCF Trustee orientation.  Supervises Executive Assistant.  Performs other duties as assigned by the General Counsel.

Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the General Counsel, the responsibilities of the Senior Director, National Board Office, include:


  • Manage the day-to-day logistical and administrative operations in the National Board Office
  • Coordinates technical and administrative support to the board’s committee chairs, including arranging conference calls, ensuring the recording meeting minutes, preparation of resource material, etc.
  • Coordinates board and committee meeting planning, including the development of agendas and board packets, as well as ensuring the recording the meeting minutes to provide full and timely documentation of the board’s business discussions and decision making in consultation with the General Counsel.
  • Coordinates with support staff regarding logistics for board member travel to ensure attendance at regularly scheduled board meetings and other NAACP-sponsored functions where board members are representing the organization.
  • Maintain official records and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.
  • Understand board bylaws, policies, and procedures to ensure such protocols are known and followed. Manage board bylaws, collecting and compiling all amendments.
  • Manage all board files, information and data including: multiple boards of directors contact lists, listservs, board member biographies and photos for variety of communication needs
  • Responsible for archiving of board materials.


  • Acts as the staff liaison to the board of directors ensuring that all members are kept abreast of current and accurate NAACP-related information through consistent and timely communication.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison to the boards of directors including routing board member questions and requests to appropriate staff members for follow up and serve as a conduit for information between staff and board.
  • See that the board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all important factors influencing it.
  • Publicize the activities of the Chairman and Board of Directors, in coordination with the Communications and New Media departments, via social marketing mediums, i.e. Facebook, twitter, blogs, monthly columns in print media, etc.
  • Research and prepare materials for the Chairman’s signature; authorized to sign correspondence at all levels.

Board Orientation and Development

  • Develops Board Orientation Program, and conducts and coordinates orientation activities for new board and SCF members.
  • Identifies and plans ongoing training for all members to ensure they are fully informed on all elements of NAACP-related business, such as board liability issues, program services, and operating functions.
  • Ensure all new board members receive orientation materials and related materials; keep documents up to date as required.
  • Conduct exit interviews with Board members.

Strategic Planning

  • Coordinates the board’s planning process with the Chairman, including implementation strategies, tracking progress of the approved plan, and making periodic progress reports to the staff and board of directors.
  • Assists Chairman in the implementing comprehensive board-driven fundraising strategy that includes sustainable activities including board member giving and board-initiated major gifts, planned gifts, grants, corporate gifts, appeals to individuals, special initiatives, workplace gifts, events, and cause related/social marketing campaigns.
  • Fosters innovative thinking on current and future board fundraising activities.
  • The Senior Director shall maintain communications between the Board and all volunteers and full time Staff and shall apprise Staff of board resolutions, directives and decisions at regular staff meetings.
  • Promote active and broad participation by volunteers in all areas of the Association’s work.
  • Assist in research and planning strategy for Board development projects; e.g., board retreats.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant developments and trends in the field.

Meetings and Travel

  • Oversee identification, compilation and timely production of all materials for board meetings including: coordinate roles of various staff, agenda development with Chairman and President/CEO; reports, reference documents, board binders, etc.
  • Facilitate distribution of official minutes and notes for board meetings, conference calls, board executive committee meetings, and committee meetings; works with staff and board of other committees to ensure appropriate recording of minutes and notes.
  • Manage Chairman’s schedule of NAACP speaking engagements and events.
  • Oversee Executive Assistant’s role in ensuring effective coordination of Chairman’s travel arrangements and preparing appropriate expense claims as submitted by the Chairman.

Research and Reporting

  • Research and assemble data for reports to the Chairman and Board of Directors.
  • Research and draft material for speeches and articles for the Chairman.
  • Draft the Chairman's report for quarterly Board meetings and monthly executive committee calls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the General Counsel and Chairman of the NAACP Board.


The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies, and personal qualities:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, Public Health, or a related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of Board of Director meeting activities, information requirements and protocols, and logistical planning required.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills, and the ability to interact with staff at the highest organizational level and multi-task in a fast-paced environment required.
  • Some knowledge of public relations, media relations and social marketing strategies preferred.
  • Highly proficient personal computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software (e.g., Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) required. Experience preparing and maintaining databases and using social marketing networks (Facebook, twitter, blog,) preferred.
  • Sufficiently familiar with legal documents (articles, by-laws, IRS letters, etc.) to note applicability during meetings.
  • Ability to listen, analyze, think clearly and creatively, work well with people individually and in a group.
  • Willing to prepare for and attend board and committee meetings, ask questions, take responsibility and follow through on a given assignment.
  • Experience in cultivating and orienting board members and other volunteers.
  • Ability to read and understand financial statements.
  • Knowledgeable about the substantive program areas of the Association.
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of professionalism when working with others—both internal and external to the organization.
  • Must be exceptionally organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently with consistent follow through.
  • Excellent proofreading and editing skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects effectively under deadline
  • Ability to trouble-shoot and problem-solve.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Willingness and ability to work non-standard hours and travel, as necessary.
