Summary:

We seek a Youth Organizer who will be responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing our national grassroots organizing strategy with young people. The incumbent will provide both direction and support to NAACP stakeholders (specifically state and state/area youth & college divisions); mobilize units, members, prospective members and allies to engage in grassroots issue advocacy campaigns and legislative organizing based on priorities established by the Youth and College Division and the larger parent body.

Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the National Youth and College Director, incumbent will: 

  • Develop, implement and manage a measurable and sustainable grassroots organizing strategy that will engage middle and high school students in grassroots advocacy and issue area campaigns.
  • Oversee training and capacity-building activities related to grassroots organizing and advocacy campaigns; expose target constituencies to fundamental principles that enhance their ability to create social change in their local communities.
  • Ignite coalition-building and foster productive relationships between the State/State-Area Conferences and State Youth & College Divisions to increase meaningful youth activism and engagement.
  • Implement multi-faceted advocacy and civic participation campaigns on key issues, including supporting the training of college and young adult leadership and members to act as organizers and advocates in establishing alliances to integrate non-members into NAACP campaigns.  This will be accomplished while operating within campaign accountability standards established by the National Youth and College Director.
  • Support the work of NAACP programs and departments in their engagement with the Youth and College Division, including:
    • Develop an annual plan to increase the number of units in compliance with NAACP requirements nationally, in conjunction with Unit Administration Division.
    • Assist the National Youth and College Director and Regional Directors in the identification of opportunities for the chartering and reactivation of units
    • Review and handle questions and/or problems from NAACP units, in coordination with Regional Directors and the Unit Administration Department
    • Provide staff support to relevant Board committees, as assigned
    • Maintain timely, effective and efficient communication with the National Youth Work Committee and other important stakeholders
  • In coordination with the National Youth and College Director, develop, plan and implement all youth and college programs for the Association’s annual convention
  • Represent the Association in meetings with strategic partners as directed by the division director
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary by the National Youth and College Director


Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will possess many, if not all, of the following professional qualifications, competencies and personal qualities:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university
  • At least two (2) years of organizing experience, preferably in a national nonprofit organization
  • Expertise in community organizing strategy and tactics, as well as, non-partisan issue based organizing; specific skills should include grassroots activism
  • Solid understanding of and experience with social media and e-advocacy campaigns
  • Considerable experience in youth organizing and student leadership development
  • Ability to work in teams, participate in cross-departmental planning and work with a diverse group of stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to operate confidentially 
  • Exemplary time management skills; ability to work under pressure and meet urgent deadlines with compromising the quality of the finished product
  • Ability to prioritize assignments and demonstrate a high degree of initiative
  • A working understanding of NAACP structure, policy, procedures and goals
  • Flexibility to work beyond regular core business hours as needed
  • Ability to travel, as needed
