NAACP Program Prepares Community Leaders to Engage in Economic Education and Advocacy

(Washington, DC) – On Friday, August 24, 2012, the NAACP will host a reception welcoming its national and local partners to celebrate the launch of their 2nd annual "Train the Trainer" program.  “Train the Trainer” is a micro-grant opportunity, launched by the NAACP Economic Department, to equip NAACP units with the knowledge and tools to engage in economic education and advocacy work in their local communities.

“Train the Trainer is a demonstration of NAACP’s commitment to bringing economic education and resources to communities of color which have been most heavily impacted by the great recession and historically have been economically disenfranchised,” says Dedrick Muhammad, Director, NAACP Economic Department. 

The reception will convene NAACP units from all over the country with NAACP national staff, non-profit organizations and financial institutions in order to begin building partnerships and leveraging resources in preparation for the year long economic work ahead.

Thomas Reynolds, President of NAACP’s Montclair, NJ Branch states, “I think this grant really enables us to get people to think differently about their finances, particularly looking at where they are spending their money and how they are spending their money.”

Last year, the NAACP Economic Department launched its first “Train the Trainer” program with 21 NAACP units, also now referred to satellite units, nationwide. The NAACP Economic Department welcomed 21 units into this program and provided them with the training, tools and technical assistance to economically empower their communities.

In turn, the units have hosted approximately 100 workshops that have reached over 5,000 people.  Director of Economic Education, Mjiba Frehiwot, credits the success of this program to the dedicated NAACP units. She says, “Working with NAACP units on the ground allows us to advance economic empowerment in very tangible and meaningful ways.”

Wells Fargo, the first bank to endorse the NAACP’s Responsible Mortgage Lending Principles, is a sponsor of the reception that will be held at the Financial Freedom Center in Washington, D.C.

The Financial Freedom Center is also the headquarters of the NAACP Economic Department, which aims to educate around the realities and histories of racial economic inequality, recommend practical solutions and mobilize individual and community action.
