In 1998 the ERI expanded to include the Telecommunications industry, which was the sixth largest domestic industry at that time and had annual revenues exceeding $800 billion. That year, the Telecommunications industry received a C (2.28). In 2006, after many mergers and acquisitions, the telecommunications industry earned a B- (2.86).
In 2000, the Financial Services industry was added to the ERI, and in 2003 the ERI expanded to include the General Merchandising and Automotive industries as well. All three of these industries received disappointing grades their first year, with Financial Services and Automotive receiving a D+ and General Merchandising receiving a C-. However, in 2006, the Financial Services and Automotive industries both improved to a C and General Merchandising improved to a C-.
