The Crisis: We Are Done Dying (Vol 127)

George Floyd was murdered. Lynched. By police.

Just two months earlier, Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American emergency medical technician, was asleep in her apartment when she was fatally shot by three Louisville, Ky., police officers who had a no-knock warrant.

And in February, Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was jogging in Brunswick, Ga., when he was hunted down by three White men who shot him dead.

Protests erupted worldwide from the injustice of it all — from France and Germany to Italy and Ireland, New Zealand and Brazil and countries throughout Africa.

We are in a new era, a new space. People are looking at things differently. Statements are nice, but how will we take this moment to address the root causes of structural and systemic racism that have created the disparities that exist in education, health, income and the criminal justice system?

Yes, we are marching, but we have to address the nation's underlying condition of racism before we can get to equality for all.

In the July 2020 issue you'll find:

  • Interactive videos and stories on the international protests for Black lives.
  • The Literary Quilt, a dramatic photo essay that speaks voice to the nation's civil unrest from 16 of the nation's top Black writers, including Dee Rees, dream hampton, Kiese Laymon, and Jesmyn Ward.
  • A series of stories on the impact of COVID-19 on the African American community.
